Primary 6 Math for September - Preparing for PSLE

Updated: Feb 3, 2023

Here's what students can expect for Primary 6 Math for the month of September.

In September, P6 students are done with all the topics and are now into intensive PSLE Revision. Let’s take a quick look at the format of the Mathematics paper taken from the SEAB website.

Paper 2

Paper 2 is normally the killer. How can Parents help to prepare their child?

  • Yes Paper 2 is where students have to handle 12 problem sums ranging from 3-5 marks.

  • Some students have time management issues and panic when they realise that time is running out.

  • So it’s a good practice for parents to time them when they are doing revision paper. And advise them to spend adequate time for each question and move on to the next question if they are stuck at one for too long.

  • They can circle the Question and come back to it after they have looked through the whole paper.

  • Suggested time spent on each question in Paper 2 is as follows.

  • Get students to Highlight keywords in the question, label and write down their statements and check their answers and units at the end.

  • For questions that they are not familiar with, get them to do and try the same question again.

Are heuristics a major part of problem solving? What are the commonly tested ones?

Yes other than the questions that requires model drawing, the commonly used heuristics used are as follows.

  • Remainder concept

  • Guess and check/ Assumption

  • Working Backwards

  • Grouping

  • Constant one

  • Constant total

  • Constant difference

  • Equal fractions

  • If-if /When -When

  • Number of units × value

  • Simultaneous Equations

  • Units and Parts

For today's blog, we will be sharing on one of the more challenging heuristic concept:

Units and Parts

Solution:

Since there is no obvious relationship between the number of cookies and tarts before and after, we use units and parts to solve this question.

Before

C : T

5 u : 3 u

Change

C : T

− 486 : − 149

After

C : T

4 p : 7 p

Form equations for cookies and tarts.

C: 5 u – 486 = 4 p

T: 3 u – 149 = 7 p

Just like what is taught in simultaneous equations, we make either the units or the parts the same by multiplying.
