Here's what students can expect for Primary 1 Math for the month of February.
Topics taught in February are usually Subtraction within 10 and Addition and Subtraction within 10.
Number bonds learnt in the previous month is useful when learning Subtraction within 10. Students are taught to identify the Whole which is the total in the question.
For Eg: 9 – 2 = _______
9 – 2 = 7
This is especially useful for questions like this too.
For Eg: 2 + ______ = 9
Students will make the mistake to add when they see ‘+’. Hence it is good habit to get them to identify the whole and place it in the number bond to get the answer.
A common question parents always ask:
Will my P1 child have to handle problem sums at this level?
The answer is Yes.
For Addition and Subtraction within 10, students will be exposed to simple 1- step problems sums as shown below. The more difficult problem sums are those with 2 steps.
For Example:
John has 10 stickers. He gave 4 stickers to Tim.
How many stickers does John have left?
OR
James had 10 marbles. He lost 8 marbles to his brother in a game.
His mother bought him another 7 marbles.
How many marbles did James have in the end?
They are also required to form 2 addition facts and 2 subtraction facts from a picture, number bond and or a set of number. This set of facts are called fact family.
What can you do to prepare them?
As Number Bonds lays a good foundation for their understanding in Addition and Subtraction concept, it is essential that students understand number bonds well.
Visit these websites to let students practice their addition and subtraction so that they will be faster as time goes by:
(to use interactive games to retain the knowledge)
Children learn best when teaching is done with real life examples or scenarios. Get them to appreciate the numerals that naturally occurs in our daily lives.
When shopping at the supermarket with your child, count the number of items in the trolley or let them add/subtract the number of items in the trolley.
Reading word problems and writing addition/subtraction equations are things parents need to do alongside students and encourage the child to make it a good habit.
What are the common mistakes made by P1 students?
Students often relate ‘more’ and ‘+’ to add or ‘less’ and ‘−‘ to subtract. It is important to let them know that it is not always the case and they have to read the question carefully and rush into finding the answer.
For Example:
Sally has 5 cupcakes. She has 3 fewer cupcakes than her sister. How many cupcakes does her sister have?
Wrong Solution: 5 – 3 = 2
Correct Solution: 5 + 3 = 8
and
1 + ______ = 9
Wrong Solution: 1 + 9 = 10
Correct Solution: 9 – 1 = 8
