Maths Exam Tips: Time Management for O Level A Math and E Math Exam

One of the greatest fears of students taking the O-Level examinations is not being able to complete the papers in time. Although the total time allocated may seem abundant, students tend to spend too much time on the first few questions and have to rush through the remaining. Needless to say, time management is a very important skill that must be trained. This article will cover a few tips on how to manage your time well in O-Level E Math & A Math exam.

1. Understanding Time Allocation

Both O-Level E Math and A Math consist of Paper 1 and Paper 2, each worth 90 marks. The total duration for each of these papers is 2 hours and 15 minutes.

This means that, on average, 1.5 minutes should be spent for each mark. Of course, this is just a rough gauge and does not take into account buffer time for checking your work at the end of the paper. Some questions may be more challenging or tedious for the same number of marks. However, there will also be questions that are relatively easy and fast to complete for the number of marks allocated.

With that said, allocating 1.5 minutes per mark can be used as a rule of thumb when attempting questions. For example, a 2-mark question should take you no more than 3 minutes, and a 5-mark question should take no more than 7.5 minutes. It is fine to go slightly over the time allocation per question, but if you realise that you are stuck or cannot finish the question any time soon, it is a good idea to just move on. Remember that you can still obtain some method marks without completing the question.

2. Timed Practice

There is no better way to prepare for the O-Level examinations than to practice regularly under timed conditions. While many students prefer practising papers at their own pace, simulating exam conditions is a highly effective strategy. This approach is grounded in the psychological concept of retrieval cues, which suggests that people are more likely to recall facts when placed in an environment similar to where they learned them. It also helps reduce the likelihood of mental blocks, which can be terrifying during an important examination. Furthermore, doing timed practices provides a direct way to gauge one's capabilities, limitations, and progress over time.

When doing a timed practice, it is recommended to clear your study desk and remove all distractions, such as mobile devices. Set the duration of the paper on a digital alarm clock and complete the practice paper under exam conditions. Resist the temptation to refer to notes or check the answers if they are provided. When the timer runs out, use a different-coloured pen to complete any unfinished parts (just because the time is up does not mean you can ignore the questions you didn't manage to complete!).

3. Perseverance

Sitting through the entire length of an exam can be challenging, causing some students to quit midway. Nevertheless, building your stamina is crucial to adequately preparing for the real test. Don't let your initial practice results discourage you! Conduct a thorough review after each practice session, reflecting on your time management. For instance, consider whether you could have skipped a tricky question sooner to tackle the easier ones first. Identify all the gaps in your understanding and application of topics and concepts. With consistent practice and review, you'll gradually improve your speed and accuracy. However, ensure you take adequate breaks between practice sessions to avoid burnout

Long-Term Preparation Tips

1. Regular Review and Practice

Regular review and practice are crucial for mastering maths exam. Consistently practice with past year school exam papers to familiarise yourself with the exam format and question types. This practice will also help you to develop a deeper understanding of the mathematics syllabus.

2. Study Groups and Tutoring

Consider joining a study group or seeking help from a tutor. Study groups provide a platform for discussing and solving problems collectively, which can enhance your understanding of complex topics. Tutors can offer personalised guidance and strategies tailored to your strengths and weaknesses.

3. Maintaining a Balanced Study Routine

While intense preparation is necessary, maintaining a balanced study routine is equally important. Ensure that you take regular breaks during your study sessions to avoid burnout. Physical activities, hobbies, and adequate sleep are crucial for maintaining mental and physical well-being.

4. Simulating Exam Conditions

Simulating exam conditions can significantly enhance your exam performance. Set aside specific times for practice exams and treat them as real exams. This will help you get used to the pressure and time constraints of the actual exam. It also helps in building your stamina to sit through the entire duration of the exam.

Time management is a crucial skill for success in the O-Level A Math and E Math examinations. By understanding how to allocate your time effectively, practising under exam conditions, and developing strong study habits, you can enhance your exam performance. Remember to stay positive, utilise available resources, and maintain a balanced study routine.
