Your child scores well on Whole Numbers in class, so you tick it off the revision list and move on to the topics that look harder. Then the PSLE Maths Whole Numbers question in Paper 2 comes back with marks missing, and nobody can quite explain why. Most parents assume this topic is the straightforward part of the paper — our 10-year data tells a different story.
Whole Numbers is not one topic. It is really three, and each version asks your child to think in a completely different way.

Why Whole Numbers Is the Most-Tested Topic in PSLE Maths
Whole Numbers is the single most-tested topic in the entire PSLE Maths paper, and it has held that position for 10 years running. That is not a hunch — it comes from data.
We analysed over 470 PSLE Maths questions from 2016 to 2025. Three topics appeared in every single paper across that decade, without exception:

Together, these three topics make up roughly 35% of the entire paper — more than one question in every three. Whole Numbers sits at the top of that list, appearing six to eight times a year across all three booklets.
That frequency is exactly why the topic deserves more attention than it usually gets. A parent who treats Whole Numbers as "the easy part" is treating the most valuable topic on the paper as an afterthought.
The reason it is underestimated becomes clear once you see how differently it is tested.

The Three Versions of Whole Numbers Your Child Will Meet
The topic on the syllabus is called Whole Numbers. But in the exam, it appears in three distinct forms, and each one sits in a different part of the paper.

The topic is the same across all three. The thinking required is very different.
This is the point most revision plans miss. Your child can be completely secure in Version 1 and still lose every Version 3 mark on the paper, because success in one version does not carry over to the next.
Versions One and Two: The Marks Your Child Should Be Banking
The first two versions of Whole Numbers are the ones your child can realistically secure with consistent practice. They are also the ones most parents already recognise.
Version 1 — Easy. This version covers place value, rounding, and ordering numbers. These are the one-mark questions in Paper 1A, and they are manageable for most children. The skill being tested is recall and accuracy rather than reasoning.
Version 2 — Medium. This version steps up to multi-step calculations, number patterns, and factors and multiples combined into a single question. These sit at Paper 1B level and require careful working rather than quick answers. A child who rushes here will arrive at a wrong answer through a correct method, which is one of the most frustrating ways to lose a mark.

Between them, Versions one and two account for a meaningful share of the six to eight Whole Numbers questions your child will face. Securing them is necessary — but it is not sufficient.

Version Three: Where PSLE Maths Whole Numbers Marks Get Dropped
Version three is where the topic stops behaving like the easy part of the paper. These are the complex word problems in Paper 2, and they are where marks get dropped.
What makes them hard is not the Whole Numbers content itself. It is that Whole Numbers no longer appears on its own. It is combined with other topics — fractions, ratio, or algebra — inside a single question.
That combination changes the task completely:
Your child must first work out which topics are actually involved
Then decide the order in which to apply them
Then carry the working through several stages without a slip
None of that is tested in Paper 1A, where a Whole Numbers question is simply a Whole Numbers question. A child who has only practised the topic in isolation has never had to make those decisions under time pressure.
