PSLE Science Questions: Why a Correct Answer Still Loses the Mark

Your child understood the science, wrote something true, and lost the mark anyway. That is the most common complaint parents bring to us about science, and it is almost never a knowledge problem.
In primary science, a correct fact is not the same as a correct answer. The marker is checking a specific structure — a comparison word, a named variable, a second clause, a reason rather than a restatement. Miss the structure and a scientifically sound sentence scores nothing.
The encouraging part: the rules are consistent, and there are only about eight of them. Most PSLE science questions are marked against the same small set of structures, and those structures repeat from P3 right through to the PSLE. Here they are, with the examples that show them working.
Where these rules come from
These are the conventions our own markers apply to PSLE science questions and the practice papers that lead up to them, assembled by our curriculum team from the annotated answer keys and worksheets used across P3 to P6. They are not an official MOE mark scheme, and we are not reproducing one. They are the patterns that show up again and again when you read a few thousand marked answers.

Rule 1: An Answer Can Be True and Still Score Zero
This is the trap we see more than any other. On a conclusion question, children scan the options and pick the one that sounds scientifically correct. But the question is not asking what is true. It is asking what the experiment actually showed.

The sharpest example is a P4 Matter item: a syringe with its tip sealed by plasticine. Why can the plunger not be pushed in fully?
Three of the four options are true statements about air. A child who has been taught to eliminate the false ones has no way through. The discriminator is a single word in the question — fully. The plunger moves partway because air can be compressed; it stops because air occupies space.
What to practise: before looking at the options, ask what does the question actually want? — the reason, the conclusion, or just a true fact.
Rule 2: Check Whether the Question Wants the Right Answer or the Wrong One
This is the most frequently printed warning in our whole collection of marked papers, and it appears in nine different topics across three year levels. Children read the stem quickly, find a true option, and tick it — without noticing the question asked which statement is false.

Adaptations has its own version: is the question asking for a behavioural or a structural adaptation? Same failure, different word.
Rule 3: A Comparison Question Scores Zero Without the Comparison Word
This one is brutal and completely avoidable. On compare questions our mark schemes say plainly: zero marks if no comparison is made. Both halves of the answer can be factually correct and the score is still nothing, because the answer never actually compared anything.
The required connectives are taught from P3:

What to practise: if the question says compare, similarity or difference, the answer must contain both, but or while. No connective, no mark. It is the cheapest mark in the subject to protect.
Rule 4: Two Out of Three Is Half, Not Nearly All

On multi-blank identification questions, marks are awarded in bands, not per blank.

Getting one of three right scores nothing at all, and getting two of three is exactly half — not "almost full marks", which is how most children describe it when they come home. Worth knowing before you reassure them.
Rule 5: A Two-Mark Answer Has Two Halves
When a question is worth [2], it is almost always testing two separate things, and our mark schemes split them predictably: the mechanism and the consequence. A single-clause answer caps at one mark no matter how well written it is.
The clearest structure is the one our P4 Heat material uses:
Since [the object] is colder than [the source], [1 mark] the [object] will gain heat and increase in temperature. Hence, [the consequence]. [1 mark]
Neither half scores on its own. The comparison earns the first mark; the mechanism plus its consequence earns the second.
What to practise: count the marks, then count the clauses in the answer. If the question says [2] and the answer is one clause, a mark is missing by construction.

Rule 6: Name Both Things
A whole family of lost marks comes from naming one thing where the question needs two:
"Work together" questions need both system names — for example the circulatory and digestive systems, not just one of them.
Experiment conclusions need both the changed variable and the measured variable, in this shape: "As the [changed variable] increases, the [measured variable] increases."
Cycles in Water answers frequently forget to state the results of the experiment at all.
What to practise: after writing an answer to a how or why question, count the nouns. If the question involved two things, two things should be named.
Rule 7: One Changed Variable, or the Experiment Is Unfair
Fair-test discipline appears at every level, and it invalidates otherwise correct reasoning. If a proposed set-up changes two things at once, the answer is marked wrong even when the science inside it is sound — the comment in our papers is "not acceptable as there are more than one changed variable, resulting in an unfair experiment."
There is a subtler version at P6. The energy statements carry an all-else-equal condition: greater mass means more kinetic energy — given the same speed. Drop the condition and the statement is no longer true.
Rule 8: Sometimes More Than One Answer Is Accepted
Not every question has a single keyed answer. Our papers often print accept any suitable answer or accept other reasonable answers — and on circuit questions, things as open as accept any other possible connections as long as the required components are connected together.
This matters for how you check work at home. If your child's answer differs from a model answer, it is not automatically wrong. Ask whether it satisfies the same requirement, in the same structure.
Two Worked Answers
Explaining how a shadow forms — one mark, and three parts are needed:
Light from the torch travelling in straight line is blocked by the puppet that does not allow light to pass through, forming a shadow.
Light travels in straight lines → it is blocked → by an object that lets no light through. "The puppet stops the light" has the whole idea and none of the required wording.
Explaining why mould grew fastest on one slice of food:
The slice had water, oxygen and warmth, which are the conditions needed for the growth of mould.
Three named conditions. "It was left out too long" names a length of time, not a condition, and scores nothing.
What to Do With This at Home
Three checks, in order of payoff:
Take one marked science answer where your child lost a mark and ask which rule above it broke. In our experience it is nearly always Rule 1, 3 or 5. Naming the rule is more useful than re-teaching the topic.
On every [2] question, count the clauses. One clause for two marks is a structural loss, visible before you even check the science.
On every compare question, look for both, but or while. If it is missing, that is the mark.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my child lose marks when the answer is scientifically correct?
Most often because the answer is true but not what the question asked — a fact instead of a reason, or a statement instead of a comparison. See Rules 1 and 3.
Is there one skill that helps across all PSLE science questions?
Yes — reading the question for what it wants before reading the options. Almost every rule above is a version of that. It is also why practising science PSLE questions without checking the answer structure tends not to move the mark.
How many marks is a PSLE Science open-ended answer worth?
Individual questions vary, but the pattern that matters is that a [2] question almost always splits into two halves — mechanism and consequence — and a one-clause answer caps at one mark.
What words must a comparison answer contain?
Both for similarities; but or while for differences. Without one of them, a comparison answer can score zero even when both facts are right.
If my child gets two out of three blanks right, is that nearly full marks?
No. That is one mark out of two. One out of three scores nothing.
Is there always only one correct answer?
No. Many of our papers print accept other reasonable answers. If your child's wording differs from a model answer, check whether it meets the same requirement rather than assuming it is wrong.
