Students were shown three set-ups, each with different numbers of batteries and bulbs arranged in a series circuit, all placed near water plants. The aim was to test how the amount of light affects the rate of photosynthesis, which is measured by the volume of oxygen produced.


The changed variable was the number of batteries and bulbs, which directly influenced the light intensity. The measured variable was the volume of oxygen released—indicative of the photosynthesis rate.


To answer this question correctly, students needed to:

  • Recall that the more intense the light, the higher the rate of photosynthesis.

  • Recognise that in a series circuit, more batteries with bulbs mean brighter bulbs.

  • Understand that more brightness leads to more oxygen produced.


Set-up 1 had the lowest light output (1 battery, 1 bulb), and Set-up 3 had the highest (3 batteries, 3 bulbs). Thus, the correct bar graph should show oxygen volume increasing from Set-up 1 to Set-up 3.


Answer: Option 3 – the graph that shows increasing oxygen output.

  • Therefore, the water had not yet begun to freeze—it was still a liquid.


Incorrect options:

  • Option 1 and 4 claimed the water was solid or freezing—both ruled out by the temperature.

  • Option 2 said the water was getting cooler, which isn’t true if the temperature is constant.


Answer: Option 3 – water is a liquid at a constant temperature.


Why it’s a challenging PSLE question: It tested students’ understanding of scientific processes and their ability to interpret graphs under pressure.

  • Since the train didn’t go straight, the force couldn’t have come from one direction.

  • The best explanation: Forces were acting in different directions.


Answer: Option 3 – the force on the train was not in the same direction.

Part (b)


Using this, students then had to infer how decomposing dead plants in nests (which release substance X) affect the young. Thinner shells mean easier hatching for fully developed young—an advantage in nature.


Part (c)


The bar graph showed how different temperatures affected the number of male and female hatchlings. To ensure species continuity, an equal number of both genders is ideal. This occurred at 32°C.

  • When the switch is closed, current flows, magnetising the iron cylinder.

  • This repels the captain upwards.

  • When the magnet and metal contact separate, the circuit breaks.

  • No current → no magnetism → captain falls.

  • Cycle repeats, creating an up-and-down motion.


Part (b) – What Happens After Hours of Use


As the batteries discharge, less chemical energy is available. This reduces the strength of the electromagnet:

  • Less repelling force = captain moves slower.

  • Captain also reaches a lower height.
