PSLE Science: A Complete Guide for Parents (P3–P6)

PSLE Science is a four-year subject, not a one-year one. The paper your child sits in P6 draws on everything taught from P3 onwards, organised into five big themes — Diversity, Cycles, Systems, Interactions and Energy. Understanding that shape is the first thing that makes the subject feel manageable rather than enormous.


The second is knowing where the marks actually come from. In primary science, a correct fact is not the same as a correct answer — the paper rewards a specific way of writing what your child knows as much as knowing it. This guide maps the whole subject: what it covers, how it is marked, how to write an answer that scores, and how to revise. Each section links to a fuller guide where you want more depth.

This matters more than it looks, because the paper is written across themes, not by term. A single question can pair a P4 idea with a P6 one — a plant losing water can reach for P4 plant parts, P5 transport and P6 adaptations at once. Revising down a theme is closer to how the paper is built than revising by the order things were taught. What Recently Changed in the Syllabus?


The primary science syllabus was updated across 2024–2026, and most of what changed was wording rather than content [verify current MOE rule]. Topics were renamed and definitions were rephrased, while the underlying science stayed almost entirely the same. That sounds minor, but wording is exactly what a science marker marks — a pupil revising from an older set of notes can write a sentence that used to be correct and lose the mark on phrasing alone.

Why Does a Correct Answer Still Lose Marks?


Because primary science rewards structure as much as knowledge. The most common thing parents bring to us is a child who understood the science, wrote something true, and lost the mark anyway. The marker is usually checking for a specific structure — a comparison word, a named variable, a second clause, a reason rather than a restatement — and a scientifically sound sentence that misses the structure can score nothing.

The encouraging part is that these rules are consistent and there are only a handful of them, the same ones from P3 to the PSLE. We set them out, with worked examples, in why a correct answer still loses the mark.


How Should My Child Write a Science Answer?


Open-ended answers score on the join between what is observed and the science that explains it — and a simple, fixed shape claims both halves. The one we teach is Describe → Show → Link: describe what is observed, show the science concept that accounts for it in the syllabus's own words, then link back to what the question actually asked.

What About P3 and P4 — Is It Too Early to Worry?


About content, there is very little to worry about. About habits, more than most parents think. Lower primary looks like general knowledge — naming animal groups, sorting objects — but it is where the answering habits are quietly installed: the comparison words, the survival-needs list, the command words that tell a child whether to give, state or compare. Those are then assumed, silently, for the next four years.

A child who reaches P5 without them is not behind on content; they are behind on how to write an answer, which is harder to spot and more expensive to fix. What each of the lower levels covers, and the handful of habits worth protecting, is in the P3 and P4 science syllabus.


How should my child revise for PSLE Science?


Revise by theme, not by term, and learn two things for every fact: the exact wording that earns the mark, and the misconception that wording is designed to catch. Reading notes and recognising a sentence is not the same as being able to write it, so the most useful revision is to read the required wording, close the notes, and reproduce it. Past papers come after that — papers diagnose the lost mark; the wording is what stops it.
